Bounced emails or wrong phone numbers: what to do

What bounce rate to expect, how to read a bounce code, and how to report bounced emails or wrong numbers to Enrow.

Written by Thomas Lucy

With emails found or verified by Enrow, expect less than 1% of hard bounces. If your hard bounce rate goes above 3%, or if a phone number is wrong, send the list to [email protected]. The team checks it and gives your credits back when the error comes from Enrow.

What bounce rate to expect

  • Less than 1% of hard bounces is normal for emails found or verified by Enrow.

  • Above 3%, write to support (see below).

Only hard bounces count. Soft bounces are temporary and don't mean that the address is wrong.

Read the bounce code

When an email bounces, the mail server sends back a code. Its first digit tells you what kind of bounce it is.

Codes that start with 4: soft bounce (temporary). The server could not deliver the message for now, for example because the mailbox is full (4.2.2), the server is busy (4.3.2) or the connection timed out (4.4.1). Your sending tool usually tries again later. The address is not the problem.

Codes that start with 5: hard bounce (permanent). The message will never be delivered. Look at the code to know why:

  • The address doesn't exist or no longer works: for example 5.1.0 (invalid address), 5.1.1 (mailbox doesn't exist), 5.2.1 (mailbox disabled) or 5.4.12 (domain not found). Remove these addresses from your list. These are the bounces to report to Enrow.

  • The message or your sending setup was refused: codes that start with 5.7, for example 5.7.1 (delivery not authorized), 5.7.23 (SPF check failed) or 5.7.25 (DKIM check failed). These codes say that a spam filter or a security rule blocked your email. They are not about the address.

Common causes on the sender side

  • An old list. A result describes the address at the time of the check. An address stops working when its owner leaves the company. Verify your list again before a campaign if your last check was a while ago.

  • Your sending domain. A new domain, a poor sender reputation, or missing SPF, DKIM or DMARC records can get your emails blocked. You can check your domain with Enrow's free SPF, DKIM and DMARC checker.

  • Data from other sources. If your campaign mixes emails from Enrow and from other tools, check where the bounced addresses come from.

Report bounced emails

Send an email to [email protected] with:

  • the list of the addresses that hard bounced, with their bounce code or message if you have it,

  • the file you got them from, or the date of the search,

  • how you used Enrow: the app, the Chrome extension, the API or an integration such as Clay.

Report bounces as soon as you can: your searches are deleted after 3 months, and the team needs them to check. When the error comes from Enrow, your credits are given back.

Wrong or unassigned phone numbers

Enrow gives one number per person: a mobile or a direct line. If a number is not in service, or belongs to someone else, send to [email protected] the LinkedIn profile URL and the number you got. The team checks it and gives your credits back when the error comes from Enrow.

Note: Contact data changes over time: people change jobs, addresses and phone numbers. Enrow's results are correct at the time of the search, so use them soon after you get them.
