Set up automatic top-up

Buy a credit pack automatically each time your balance drops below a threshold, so your searches never stop.

Written by Thomas Lucy

Automatic top-up buys a pay-as-you-go credit pack for you each time your balance drops below a number of credits you choose. Turn it on in Billing > Settings, under Balance protection.

Turn on automatic top-up

  1. Go to Billing in the left menu, then click the Settings tab.

  2. In Balance protection, turn on Pay-as-you-go top-up.

  3. In Credit threshold, enter the balance that should trigger a top-up, for example 2,000 credits.

  4. In Top-up volume, choose the pack to buy each time.

  5. Click Save.

If your balance is already below the threshold when you save, a pack is bought right away.

The Pay-as-you-go top-up switch in Billing settings

To see the pack sizes and their prices, click Plans & credit packs in Billing > Overview, then the One-time payment tab. Automatic top-up offers the same packs. A pack marked custom has a rate negotiated for your account.

How it works

  • Each top-up is a payment. It is charged to your default payment method, and its invoice appears in Billing > Invoices.

  • You get pay-as-you-go credits. They never expire, even if you stop your subscription. Your subscription credits are still used first.

  • A new pack is bought each time your balance drops below the threshold again. There is no limit on the number of top-ups per day or per month. If you use a lot of credits, for example through the API, keep an eye on your top-ups.

  • You are notified. Each top-up sends a "Credits topped up" notification, with the amount charged, to the bell at the top of the app. To also get it in Slack or Discord, use the Automatic refills line of your notification settings (see Manage your notifications). There is no email for it.

Automatic top-up works on any paid account, with or without a subscription. It is not available on the Free plan.

Turn off automatic top-up

  1. Go to Billing > Settings.

  2. In Balance protection, turn off Pay-as-you-go top-up.

  3. Click Save.

Automatic top-up or early renewal?

You can't use both at the same time. Turn off one before you turn on the other.

  • Pay-as-you-go top-up adds credits that never expire, and your renewal date doesn't change. Choose it if you need extra credits now and then, or if you don't have a subscription.

  • Early renewal starts a new period of your plan, and your renewal date moves. Choose it if you often use all your plan's credits before your renewal date. See Renew your plan early, manually or automatically.

Tip: Prefer to decide yourself when to buy credits? Set a low-credit alert instead.

Note: On a team, only the team owner manages billing.
